Plan mapped for Aldinga’s aquatic centre

The proposed Aldinga Bay Aquatic Centre has had another step forward as the Aldinga Bay Residents Association were treated to an update on the campaign and planning study on Monday, May 20.

Aldinga Bay Aquatic Centre Action Group members Karen Lever, Anne Cross and Tracey Atkinson presented to a small crowd of community members, showcasing the need for aquatic facilities in Aldinga.

Ms Atkinson says the meeting was a success, with a lot of support being shown for an aquatic centre in Aldinga.

“The purpose of the meeting was to report on the progress of the campaign of an aquatic centre and update people on the completion of the state planning study, which should be around the end of June,” Ms Atkinson told the Fleurieu Sun.

“It was pretty clear that with our current demographic and population growth, the community supports having a pool in Aldinga.”

$150,000 was allocated by the state government in 2022 for the planning study, which will provide a wide overview of potential sites, as well as give the Action Group the opportunity to hold community information sessions.

Ms Atkinson says the Aquatic Centre will be key in providing a swimming facility for many local residents, some of which can not travel to other facilities in Victor Harbor, Noarlunga or Marion.

“It’s about 20-30km from Noarlunga to Aldinga and there is no aquatic centre in the Yankalilla Council area,” Ms Atkinson explained.

“We have a lot of interest from disability support services and people have shown that a heated pool in Aldinga is necessary infrastructure.”

With the facilities in Noarlunga in desperate need of repair, Ms Atkinson says a modern facility in Aldinga would benefit the community and would allow for future improvements to the Noarlunga Aquatic Centre.

“There’s a need for both centres, we have a huge council area and a lot of people that want aquatic facilities,” she said.

“If Onkaparinga council were to put land aside and build a pool at Aldinga, they could then set aside funds to improve the Noarlunga facility.”
